Martin Stupich Photographs : MARTA, 1977-1978.

Images in this series depict the construction of Atlanta's mass-transit system known as MARTA. The images were created for a survey grant sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, and were taken in the areas of Five Points, Peachtree Center, Midtown, West End, Vine City, and Decatur. The photographs include images of the Atlanta skyline, buildings, building demolitions, subway stations, rail lines, and construction workers. Photographs of buildings include the Candler building, First Methodist Church, Summit building, Georgia State Capitol, Atlanta Public library, First National Bank building, Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills, DeKalb County Courthouse, the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, Grady Memorial Hospital, and the Life of Georgia building. The series also contains images of the demolition of the Carnegie Library, Atlanta National Bank, and the Forsyth building. Other images include the construction of subway stations, including the Five Points station, the Omni station, and the Decatur station. This series contains photographs of the construction of the East Line, and images of construction workers involved in building the system.

The Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, was constructed and opened in 1913. It was named for its builder, William F. Winecoff. On December 7, 1946 the hotel caught fire with 300 registered guests inside. The first call to the fire department was made at three forty-two in the morning and at six thirty in the morning firefighters were still putting out the flames. Born in 1949 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Martin Stupich is a professional photographer whose primary subjects include cultural and industrial landscapes across the United States and Asia, often focusing on the desert western frontier. He received a Master in Visual Arts from Georgia State University in 1978.
